Are you a fan of baking and want to add more baking skills to your arsenal this year? Then here is a list of items that you must add to your baking bucket list for the upcoming year. We have compiled a set of luscious baking items that you would enjoy baking meanwhile feeding your friends & family with savouries.
Break Some Bread
Bread is the best way to start your experience by adding baking to your skillset. It is much easier than you think and can be done with some simple ingredients. We all know that we tend to spend a lot of money every year to buy bread and on most occasions, they aren’t great. But a freshly baked one with cost lighter on your wallet and fill the house with a beautiful aroma.
White flour, Salt, Sugar, Warm water and Dry yeast are the only ingredients needed to make a basic French bread. Just drop in some eggs to make a Sandwich bread for your breakfast. The dough doesn’t necessarily need to have flour; for example, Zucchini, Corn, and Banana can be added to your mixture instead. FYI Bread turns out better when you add beer to the batter. Add bread to your baking bucket list.
Dabble in Bagels
Now it’s time to up the level and to enter the realm of Bagels. Have you seen doughnuts? A Bagel looks like Doughnut in shape. A yeasted wheat dough with a hole in the middle is called a Bagel. Popular in North America, Bagels are sold at most of the outlets.
The ingredients are pretty similar to the bread, but we would need to add a touch of baking soda to make them fluffy on the inside. Unlike bread, Bagels need to be boiled for about two minutes before baking them in an over. Bagels should be on your baking bucket list.
Fun With Baguettes
Have you heard about French Breadsticks? The original word for them is Baguettes. It is a long, thin loaf of bread that can be distinguished with its length and crisp crust. A baguette has a diameter of 5-6 cm and can go up to 1m in length. Although they require some planning to prepare, there is just something special about making a batch of baguettes at home.
It takes just four ingredients to make a baguette – flour, salt, water, and yeast. After kneading the dough, you need to shape them into long batons and cut small slices on the top before dropping it in the oven. Baguettes are a perfect entrée item and can be used for the main course as well.
Make Those Muffins
Done with the side items that you can bake for your meals, and now it’s time to move to the real deal – dessert baking. And first on our list of such items are muffins. There are two variations of this dessert – a part-raised flatbread one or a cupcake-like quick bread. You would be much familiar with the cupcake style.
Flour, milk, sugar, eggs, baking powder, and butter are the only ingredients you will need to make muffins. We would need to have muffin molds or muffin tray to get the right shape. You can add your favourite flavours like Vanilla, Strawberry, or Chocolate in the batter to make them even better. Every beginner baker would love to have muffins on the baking bucket list.
Crack Those Cookies
Not a fan of muffins? Then you could give cookies a try. There is nothing like a batch of homemade cookies to lift your spirits on the weekends and fill the house with a sweet smell. Cookies aren’t hard to make and are pretty similar when you compare it to bread or any other baked items.
To make a simple cookie, you will need butter, flour, sugar, eggs, and baking powder. Add some vanilla extract to enhance the sweetness. You could drop in chocolate chips or peanut butter in the batter to add some flavor to your cookies. There is a chance to get a little healthier over here if you decide to add ginger in them, would you do that?
Master The Macaroons
You can take the cookies to the next level by attempting to make macarons. This French treat is trendy at any bakery and can also be made easily at home. Generally, two biscuits/cookies are made, and a filling is added in the middle. In simple terms, a macaron is a cookie sandwich with a delicate texture.
Macaroons don’t use the regular flour that we have seen in our above items. Almond Flour is used in the batter instead of it, and we only use egg whites for making these treats. You need to be careful with the amount of time to beat the egg whites and the folding process to ensure that your cookie rises appropriately. For the filling, you could go with almost anything of your choice. Chocolate and Vanilla cream are some of our favorites. Add some food colouring to get some beautiful looking macaroons. Add bling to your baking bucket list through colourful macaroons.
Bake Those Cakes
Let’s up the level and talk about cakes. This beautiful item can attract and meltdown any person. Cakes are amazing and can bring smiles to everyone’s face at the house, even to the maker. And they are simple to make and can be done in three simple steps – Measure the ingredients, mix them in the right order and ensure you don’t over-bake it.
Flour, butter, salt, sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract is all you need to make a simple vanilla cake. You can almost throw in anything in the batter, but be careful to get proportions right or else the cake will disintegrate far too quickly. Whipped cream or form of icing can be used for the frosting.
Party With Pies
The last item that you must add on your bucket list will test your baking skills. Pies are one of the most complicated and delicate items to bake, which requires a lot of patience as well. There are generally three parts to a pie – crust, filling, and topping.
Flour, butter, and salt is what you will need to make the crust of a pie. Fruits like apple, strawberry, and lemon are some of the most commonly used fruits to make the filling. Pecan nut or meat pie isn’t uncommon, as well. If you are interested in making your topping, look into meringue or use some whipped cream.
Baking is a beautiful hobby that you can pick up this year. We would suggest that you go about it slowly and take the failures as a learning curve in your baking journey. So, what are you waiting for? Prepare for the baking bucket list immediately, and let’s get started.
