A Monsoon Day In? Try These Best Snacks Recipes At Home!

The stifling heat from the summers is quite hard to beat even when indoors during the lockdown.  The environmental repercussions of such is a nagging thought that never really goes away as well. And this is precisely the reason why the oncoming monsoons bring such joy. The natural cooling effect of the earth bestows a lovely period of time on us. Moreover, these months are marked with a breath of fresh air, the smell of dampness, wetness, and wind-blown guises worn by the people. The monsoons breathes life into the environment colouring it lush green adorned with dewdrops and while the muddy earth exudes an aroma pleasing to many, it feels fulfilling to sit back with a cup of tea and snacks and revel in it. So, here is our list of favourite and best snacks to make at home!


Munching on hot crunchy snacks while witnessing the cold torrential pour on earth is quite a cosy experience. Are you the kind of snacker that has cravings every now and then during the week? Well, apparently our cravings in monsoon even have a scientific basis behind it associated with the cooling down of our body into a more relaxed state during the monsoon. Therefore, it’s best to know what all scrumptious snacks you can make yourself in the comfort of your home during the oncoming monsoon. Listed below are a few delicious Indian snacks that make up our evening snacks but with a unique twist! 

Aloo and Daal ki Tikki 

The crisp potato and chana dal tikki is an absolutely delicious and best snacks to devour. Serve it along with chutney for enhanced flavours! 

Ingredients :

  • 500 gms mashed potatoes, boiled 
  • 3 white bread slices 
  • Salt and red chilli for taste 
  • Garam masala 
  • ½ teaspoon cumin powder
  • ½ teaspoon coriander powder
  • ½ cup chana dal (parboiled) 
  • Finely chopped green chilli
  • Lemon Juice (as per mixture’s requirement)
  • Coriander 

Recipe : 

Crumble the bread slices. Add the mashed potatoes, chana dal, coriander leaves, lemon juice and chillies into it. Furthermore, spice the mixture up with cumin powder, coriander powder, garam masala, salt and a couple of drops of oil. Mix this well. Shape the mixture into round flat patties and deep fry them until they are golden brown.

Then, serve it hot with some cooling green chutney!

Moong Dal Samosa

Hot samosas are such a delight in the rain! But this one brings a twist on the traditional samosa with a generous amount of moong dal fillings. Certainly one of the best snacks to enjoy in the rain.

Ingredients : 

For Covering : 

  • 2 cups of refined flour (sifted) 
  • 1 teaspoon of salt 
  • 2 tablespoon of oil
  • Coldwater (for kneading) 

For Filling : 

  • 3 cups of green gram (moong dal, husked and soaked) 
  • 2 tablespoon of oil
  • 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds 
  • ⅛ teaspoon of asafoetida 
  • 3 teaspoon of garam masala
  • 3 teaspoon of chilli powder 
  • 2 tablespoon of fennel seeds, powdered 
  • 2 teaspoon of coriander powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoon of mango powder 
  • Salt (for taste) 


Preparation for filling : 

Grind the green grams coarsely. Then, heat 2 tablespoons of oil and add cumin seeds and asafoetida to it on a pan. When the ingredients start to splutter in the oil, add the green gram and the rest of the ingredients to it (for the filling). Saute this in low heat until the mixture is well fried. You’ll know once the mixture stops sticking to the pan.

Take the mixture off the heat and leave it to cool.

Preparation for the covering : 

Add salt to the flour and rub oil into it. Proceed to add water to the mix and knead it until it’s a stiff dough (the stiffness is important). Leave the dough for 15 minutes or so. Afterwards, shape the dough into smooth balls and flatten them into thin rounds. Cut these into halves.

Further on, take one half, wet the edges, and fold the straight edge from the centre. Join it with the other half overlapping on this one to make a cone. Press the overlapping portion, fill the cone and then press the edges together to seal it. Add the samosas to hot oil. Lower its heat and let it cook till brown.

Lastly, enjoy a bite of your delicious samosas!

Spring Rolls 

Best Snacks Recipes At Home This Monsoon


Spring rolls are the crispy gateways to a culinary art of weaving various vegetables together with cheese, bell peppers and sun-dried tomatoes. The rolls, originating from China, have found their way into Indian Street food after its indigenisation. 

Ingredients : 

  • 1 ½ tablespoon of oil
  • 2 small spring onion bulbs
  • 1 green bell pepper (chopped) 
  • 4 pieces of sun-dried tomatoes 
  • 2 tablespoon of bread crumbs
  • 1 ½ tablespoon of parmesan cheese
  • ½ tablespoon of ginger (grated) 
  • 1 teaspoon of chives
  • 60 gram of buffalo mozzarella cheese 
  • 1 teaspoon of balsamic vinegar 
  • 2 tablespoon of cornflour 
  • 1 teaspoon of stock 

For the dip : 

  • 8 basil leaves 
  • 2 tablespoon of olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon of parmesan cheese
  • 1 garlic (smashed) 
  • 1 chilli
  • 6 green olives 
  • 1 tablespoon of Mayonnaise/Yoghurt


For the dip : 

Put basil leaves, olive oil, parmesan cheese, clove garlic, green chilly, green olives and mayonnaise into the mixer. After blending it well, add a pinch of salt and serve with spring rolls. 

For the spring roll : 

Add a dash of olive oil in a hot pan to which you can add spring onions, bell peppers, and ginger. Give it a good toss in the heat. Then, add balsamic vinegar to deglaze it and put it in a separate bowl. Blend the sun-dried tomatoes with breadcrumbs, parmesan cheese with salt and pepper for taste. Moreover, add on some chopped chives and mix well (but not too smooth).

Add spring onions and bell peppers to the mix. In a small separate bowl, make a paste with the cornflour and stock. Brush the spring roll sheet with the cornflour paste. Put a few basil leaves and top them with the cheese and tomato mix. Roll the spring roll into a cylindrical shape. Use the cornstarch and stock as a binding agent for the roll.

Deep fry it until golden brown and serve with the basil dip! Tada.

Besani Mirch

Grab a bite of the crispy filled chillies along with a cup of tea. The savoury spice is a genuine relief in the monsoons and certainly is one of the best snacks to make! 

Ingredients : 

  • 15-20 green chillies (thick variety) 
  • 2 tablespoon of oil
  • ½ cup of gram flour
  • A lunch of asafoetida 
  • ½ teaspoon of chilli powder 
  • 2 teaspoon of coriander powder 
  • 2 teaspoon of aamchoor
  • 2 teaspoon of salt 


Wash, wipe and slit the green chillies lengthwise. Then, heat one tablespoon of oil and saute the gram flour mixture in it over low flame, stirring continuously till it darkens a little. Remove the mixture and leave it to cool.

Once cooled, use this filling to stuff the green chillies. Heat the remaining oil in the same pan. Further on, add stuffed chillies to it and stir around till they look a little glossy.

Serve hot. (They’re tasty when cold as well) 

Corn Bhel

Chaat is one of the most beloved street foods infused with the crunchy sour and savoury tastes that burst in your mouth. Served with chutney and onions – here’s a corn-y twist to the chaat. Once you taste it, you will know why it is one of the best snacks in this list.

Ingredients : 

  • 2 cups of corn (boiled)
  • ½ cup of boiled potatoes (diced)
  • ¼ cup sev
  • ½ cup of onions (finely chopped) 
  • 2 tablespoon of coriander (chopped)
  • 2 teaspoon of lemon juice (for taste)
  • 2 tablespoon of chutney 


For chutney : 

  • 1 cup of coriander leaves (chopped)
  • 1 tablespoon of green chillies (chopped) 
  • 1 tablespoon of garlic (peeled and chopped)
  • 1 tablespoon of tamarind paste 
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar 
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of chilli powder


The easiest in the list!
Blend all the ingredients for the chutney together. Dilute the chutney with little water, enough to mix well with the dry mixture. Mix the corn, potatoes, half the coriander, lemon juice and chutney. Furthermore, garnish with sev and coriander and serve. 

Chicken Pakoras

Relish the taste of the succulent chicken coated with a crispy spicy batter. Chicken Pakoras are a meaty delight and best snacks for the evening. It is best accompanied with a cup of tea!

Ingredients : 

  • 250 gram of Chicken (boneless)
  • Salt (for taste)
  • 1 teaspoon of ginger garlic paste
  • 2 cups of gram flour (besan)
  • 1 teaspoon of red chilli flakes
  • 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds (crushed)
  • 1 teaspoon of coriander seeds (crushed)
  • 1 teaspoon of chicken powder
  • 1 teaspoon of dried mango powder (amchoor)
  • 2 teaspoon of Anardana
  • A pinch of baking soda
  • 2 tablespoon of green coriander (chopped)
  • 2 tablespoon of mint leaves (chopped)
  • 8 tablespoon of oil


Recipe :

Marinate chicken with salt and ginger-garlic paste and leave it for 10 minutes. In a separate bowl, mix the rest of the ingredients. Moreover, make it a batter by adding water.

Dip chicken pieces in batter and deep fry until golden brown. Serve with green chutney. 

Bangbang Batata

A crispy potato snack for quick bites offered by Tara Deshpande as part of her book, “A Sense of Spice”. It is pretty quick, easy and will make it to your best snacks list for sure.

Ingredients : 

  • 250 gm of baby potatoes
  • Salt
  • ¼ teaspoon of sugar
  • ½ teaspoon of red chilli flakes
  • ½ teaspoon of turmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoon of semolina (sooji)
  • 1 ½ tablespoon of ghee
  • 2-3 green chillies (finely chopped)
  • 1 ½ tablespoon of garlic (finely chopped)
  • Lime wedges (for serving)

Recipe :

Clean and steam the potatoes till they’re tender. Once they’re cool, peel them. Take a bowl and mix salt (to taste), chilli flakes, sugar, turmeric powder and semolina together. Use the mixture to coat the potatoes.

Further on, heat the ghee on a pan and saute green chillies and garlic for 10 seconds. Add the spiced potatoes and cook on low heat for 6-8 minutes. Keep tossing and take off heat until the potatoes are brown and the semolina is crisp. Serve hot with lime wedges. 

Fruit Chaat Bites

Ingredients : 

For marinating : 

  • ¼  cup of mustard oil
  • 2 tablespoon of balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon of malt vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon of anardana powder
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of black pepper (crushed)
  • ¼ teaspoon of deghi mirch
  • ¼  teaspoon of cumin powder (roasted)
  • ¼  teaspoon of black salt
  • ¼ teaspoon of garam masala
  • Salt (to taste)
  • ½ teaspoon of honey
  • 1 pinch of hing
  • 2 tablespoon of chana dal powder (roasted)

Fruits : 

  • 2 persimmon (ramphal)
  • 1 pineapple (semi-ripe)
  • 3 guavas
  • 3 green apples
  • 2 pears

Recipe :

Rub mustard oil, balsamic vinegar, malt vinegar, anardana powder, sugar, crushed black pepper, deghi mirch and roasted cumin powder together. Keep rubbing the mix for 5 minutes so it’s blended well.

Then, add black salt, salt, garam masala, hing and honey to this blend. Moreover, add roasted chana dal powder to thicken the mixture. Cut the fruits in bite-size pieces. Coat with the marinade and immediately roast in a hot oven. Serve warm.

Bhuna Masala Chicken Wings

Chicken wings is a finger-licking, lip-smacking dish that is served hot and spicy. However, the Bhuna masala edition of the chicken wings is its desi makeover of the western dish. The succulent meat is coated with a spicy and luscious batter that you can’t help with devour with no hesitation. Certainly, restaurant-quality!

Ingredients : 


  • ½ kg of chicken wings
  • 2 onions (julienne cut)
  • 3 tomatoes (sliced)
  • 1 capsicum (julienne cut)
  • 1 ½  teaspoon of ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon of red chili powder
  • 1 ½  teaspoon of coriander powder
  • 1 ½  teaspoon of cumin powder
  • 3 dry red chilies
  • ½  teaspoon of cumin seeds
  • ½ teaspoon of coriander seeds
  • ½ teaspoon of sugar
  • ½ cup of water
  • ½ teaspoon of lime juice
  • salt (to taste) 
  • 2 teaspoon of refined oil
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil


Recipe : 


Marination of the Wings : 

Rub the chicken wings with olive oil. Then add ginger-garlic paste, turmeric powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, and chilli powder, salt (to taste) and massage the chicken wings gently. On a heated pan, drizzle one teaspoon of oil and sear the wings in it. Add salt for taste. 


Preparation of the Bhuna Masala : 

Heat up the pan and drop 1 teaspoon of oil. Add dry red chili, cumin seeds and coriander seeds on the oil and saute it lightly. Then mix chicken wings with the bhuna masala. Moreover, add onions to it and saute it till golden brown. Toss some tomatoes and cook it for 2-3 minutes. Then add sugar, water, capsicum and lime and let it cook for 2-3 minutes more.

Sprinkle chopped coriander leaves to garnish.

Cheese Papdi

Here’s a taste of crispy fried street-favourite snacks with a cheesy dough twist. 

Ingredients : 

  • 2 cups of refined flour
  • ¼ cup of grated cheese
  • 2 tablespoon of oil
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • Water (to knead)
  • Oil (for deep-frying)

Method : 

Mix the cheese, salt and oil and knead into a stiff dough with water (make sure it’s stiff). Keep the dough aside for at least 30 minutes. Roll out dough till it is ½ cm or ⅛ inch thick and cut out into 3 cm or 1 ½ inch rounds with a cutter or into strips 3 inches long and ½ inch broad. Prick it with a fork and heat the oil for deep-frying.

Then add as many pieces till the frying pan’s capacity. Lower the heat to medium. Furthermore, fry till they are golden brown on both sides. Repeat with the rest while increasing the heat for a few seconds before adding the fresh lot.

Serve hot or cold.
