Spending most of their days touring the country, Parichay along with his companions pinned on Interlaken. From Interlaken, it was an easy bus to reach Hightide Kayak School. Moreover, the bus stopped right in front of their office. Besides, if you had an Interlaken guest card, then it was a free bus ride. Switzerland has many surprises to uncover!

However, Parichay decided to walk from Interlaken to Bonigen. It was about 30 minutes away on foot, and there wasn’t a better way to enjoy the landscapes. They picked walking instead after missing their bus. However, the short and impromptu hike was a memorable one.

They had booked the half an hour tour. That particular tour of winter kayaking took about a total time of five hours. Moreover, it included to and fro transportation time, training and then the kayaking. Hightide Kayak School offered full-day tours as well.

Upon their arrival at Hightide Kayak School, Dave, the cofounder of the school greeted them. Soon after, he helped them put on the necessary clothing for the winter kayaking – dry suits, shoes, gloves and more. He explained the use of each garment and how to wear it.

After they were ready with their gears, they took their kayaks and headed to Laka Brienz. Surprisingly, the water wasn’t freezing. In the warm afternoon sun and the glimmering water with the snow-covered mountains in the distant, it was a surreal sight to behold. Further on, the suit that they were wearing was enough to protect them from the cold breeze. Before he knew it, Parichay began kayaking on the pristine Lake Brienz.

He recalled the smile not leaving his face as he slowly rowed his kayak, etching each view in his memory. It was the best feeling ever. He reminisced the cold breeze hitting his face while sunlight keeping you warm and nobody around in the lake except him. Imagine this natural paradise! There was nobody else kayaking, boating or doing any other activity. To far stretches of the lake, it was empty and calm with us sending ripples through it each time we rowed. Moreover, the view was so intoxicating; he stopped here and there to experience different shades and moods of nature.

The Mountains and Castle

Dave kept sharing exciting insights about kayaking through their ride. Soon, he was talking about life in Switzerland, history of the Lake Brienz and much more. He made sure that they were kayaking in the right direction. Importance of every mountain, town and every spot on the lake was known to Dave! After an hour of kayaking, they made a stop at Ringgenberg. Furthermore, Dave took them to the top of the Ringgenberg castle and treated them with some homemade fruit tea.

Sipping that tea on top of the castle overlooking the lake and alps was a moment to cherish. After spending half an hour at Ringgenberg, they came back to their beloved kayaks and started paddling again. Just before the time of sunset, Dave guided them to the middle of Lake Brienz. They were sitting on their kayaks in the middle with no other sound around but the breeze. Soon, it was the hued sunset and them. It was a rippling colour change that slowly spread through the lake.

The last rays fell on the peaks of Alps and, it became pink and orange while the rest of the mountains stayed in their own shade. Moreover, this dream scene went on for a few minutes while they sat quietly staring at the beauty unfolding. Parichay recalled how pictures didn’t do even 55 justice to the sunset.

Kayak Back

Before we knew it, their dream had come to an end. Every journey comes to an end, no matter how beautiful it is. It was almost getting dark as they kayaked back to Bonigen. After getting their kayaks back to the base, they changed and talked about their relaxing experience.

Dave treated them with dark swiss chocolates. Before night, they had boarded the bus back to Interlaken.

Parichay recalled not having experienced anything that surreal in life. Thanks to Dave, he saw the best sunset of his life. A new adventure, a new view, watching the pictures and videos, he wished to see the light of the world through a different lens every time.
