Clive Humby, rightfully claimed that “data is the new oil”. Data has become an extremely essential resource and asset that is susceptible to exploitation. Thus, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) took a critical decision of banning 59 Chinese apps citing privacy concerns. These include popular Chinese applications like TikTok, Shareit, Mi Video Call, Shein, Club Factory and CamScanner. Furthermore, Meity has instructed Apple and Google Play to remove the listed applications from their respective application stores.

They have also ordered telecom operators and Internet services to block access and utilisation of these apps on their networks. The IT Ministry had claimed that it received several complaints such as misuse of apps for stealing and covert transmission of users’ data to servers that had locations outside India. In light of these events, they have taken the decision to uphold the national security and integrity of India by maintaining the sovereignty of Indian cyberspace.

For the time being, the ban on Chinese apps remains temporary. However, that has opened up spaces for Indian apps to take back the consumer market to themselves! This way, the country and the Indian apps also promote themselves as part of Modi government’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat campaign. Moreover, this has also pursued the spaces to rise along “vocal for local” slogan.

The decision of banning 59 Chinese apps is in conjunction with the Prime Minister’s Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan. It seeks to create a self-reliant nation. The ban of Chinese apps has created a demand for more Indian apps that provide similar services to the public. Citizens are already on a hunt for alternative Indian apps that they can download, in light of these events. Furthermore, the campaign originally emerged as a response to the coronavirus pandemic in the form of an economic package doled out on 12th May, 2020. It embodies Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of creating a self-reliant India.

Atmanirbhar Bharat campaign soon flourished in the events of the Chinese aggression. It serves as a crucial reminder of India’s need to become self-reliant and contribute further to the global economy. The campaign is not exclusionary in nature and allows technological exchanges, foreign direct investments and so forth. Nevertheless,  it creates a path for India’s greater contribution to the global economy.

One of the biggest examples of the campaign is the increase in the supply of personal protection equipment (PPE) from zero in March to 1,50,000 pieces a day by the beginning of May. Moreover, to some, the campaign seems to be a revamped version of the ‘Make in India’ campaign and is promoted with new slogans such as ‘Vocal for Local’.

“Vocal for Local” Meaning

“Vocal for Local” is the tagline used for the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan. This calls for the boosting of domestic manufacturing through increased consumption of domestic goods and trade protectionism. But it merely doesn’t call for the increased utilization of these products but asks to amplify and promote the domestic products in India and globally. Prime Minister Narendra Modi envisions the inclusion of India’s domestic products within the global market.

Vocal for Local is a great opportunity for swadeshi companies to boost their production and sales within the country and provide spaces for local entrepreneurs to emerge. Further on, this is also a significant shift for local arts and crafts who might see increasing attention to their products. Although, the initiative has also raised concerns regarding the unyielding effects of trade protectionism in creating a proficient manufacturing sector.

Under the banner of “Vocal for Local” India revitalizes the ‘Make in India’ campaign and urges for self-reliance in terms of the manufacturing industry. And there, the decision of banning 59 Chinese applications provides room for indigenous Indian apps to dominate the digital space in India.
